Bank of America grant supports Latino students pursuing health-related degrees

Thanks to a $250,000 grant from Bank of America through its Progresando initiative, NMSU will hire tutors to help Latino students pursuing health-related degrees, which will increase diverse representation and address medical workforce shortages.

In partnership with the education firm EAB, Bank of America selected 12 Hispanic-serving education institutions across the country, including NMSU, for its Progresando initiative, which is focused on helping more Latino students enter health fields or research.

The grant will help hire and train tutors and peer mentors to help 300 Latino students, about 150 per year. Their support will help students navigate the university and its resources, thrive in challenging classes to achieve graduation and find pathways into health professions.

In addition to supporting tutors, the grant will also help students purchase medical terminology translation software, made available in a student computer lab at in HEST’s School of Nursing, which will help students learn and feel more comfortable speaking complex terms in Spanish.

Through the resources supported from this grant, HEST expects stronger class pass rates for students and improved retention of students enrolled in health fields.
